The 3 Lights -Sailor Senshi by idolhands The 3 Lights -Sailor Senshi by idolhands
Drawn: 5.13.96

Just after the characters had appeared in the manga from Japan. I had very little reference to work with.

:cd: Done freehand, inked with brush.

:star::star: Although the creator Naoko Tekeuichi did not care for gender-changing characters (in the anime), I thought it added an interesting tone to a series that already had a cross-dressing (or drag king) lesbian in a relationship.

Ms. Tekeuichi felt strongly that only WOMEN should posess the powers of the Sailor Senshi. Transexual characters were an even stronger message about the significance and broadening of relationships and gender, to my mind. They must BECOME women, live essentially in two worlds, in order to weild their powers. Furthermore, as they come from another galaxy, are technically aliens in their human form (which doesn't appear to be tremendously important to them), allowing for a lack of gender identity crisis.

In the comic books they masquerade as males who are pop stars, rather than being physically male, which doesn't differ them much from Sailor Uranus (Haruka Tenou). However, the butch senshi took to becoming more feminine as the series reached this point, perhaps to offer more contrast along with character development.:star::star:

All that aside, I like both the comic and the cartoon (in Japanese, not English) very much. If you knew me a little better, you'd know exactly how much. Sailor Moon was the first traditional "shoujo series" that I became obsessed with. And to think, I couldn't stand it when I first read an article about the animated series, in Protoculture Addicts.

I know you do not like me commenting on your work but this is just so amazing I had to.

Love the background and the fact that you did it with little referance. At first I thought that Maker had a shoulder length hair and I was thinking okay are these make up senshi. Then I full viewed the pic and realized the pony tail of her hair was going above her head. It is sad that Fighter's hair gets lost in the background but what else can you do when you are only using ink. Besides the hair I think my fav part of this pic is how you draw the eyes. Seeing this make me want to draw them again.

taiki used to annoy me when i was younger, but now when i watch the anime and read the manga again, he's really cool and calm and in between seiya, and yaten, he's the most sane of the bunch ^_^; anywho great picture. <3 and sorry again for the mix-up

Actually, Naoko-sama, did mind that they were made men in the anime, and she was not at all pleased with it because in the manga they are women the whole time, only disguised as men on earth.

great picture though! Seiya-kun is my favorite

I think you misunderstood, that is what I said at the initial onset of my statement, going on to express my own POV on the matter (with respect to her own).

Thanks! Taiki was mine. :)

Wow! This is truly fantastic!!! I just realized that I've only drawn them once and it was about 8 years ago for a friend! ^^; Now I want to draw the Sailor Starlights again! I never realized in the manga that they where just disguised as males! I thought that they where males like in the anime ^^; That just goes to show that you learn something new everyday! :giggle:

If you're lucky, yes you do. I know what you mean, I sort of want to draw them again too. This is an old picture. I have a chibi art done of them too: [link] :)
