I voted no, only because while I got a GREAT education and had a good experience, I am now in debt and jobless. Ask me again tomorrow and I'll probably go on about how it helped my become technically better as an artist, stronger as a person, and helped me see the connections in everything.

when you go to an art school you get practice and learn "tricks"... I did for one year (yayyy I won a prize for one free year XD) I never though about going to art school before, but now I know that if I hadn't gone I would draw worse than what I draw now, even if i had tried to learn the "tricks" by myself, I would never learn everything in one year, because I wouldn't stop to draw like the time I stoped at art school.
but of course, it was just about me, others can be diferent...
I vote yes, simply because art school is a fantastic place to breed a creative spirit, however... the typical $800 per credit hour fee is absolutely insane. I'm receiving the same caliber of teaching in the same environment at a community college... which is saving me oodles of money.

It depends what you want to get out of it. It also depends on where you go.
I'm going to a game development school at the moment. I think it will be worth it when I finish because a) the school is in the right city so there are plenty of jobs available nearby b) the school is known by all the companies and so they come looking for students to employ c) it's affordable/ it's only a 2 year course d) I'm learning practical and specialized techniques that i wouldn't have learned (or spent ages trying to learn) if I taught myself.
So for me I think what *I'm* doing is worth it, but I know other people in my course that have been to other schools before choosing this one and they really regretted it because they didn't get what they wanted out of it.
I think it can be a waste if you don't seriously think about it before you go. Investigate the place, see what exactly it is you will learn, don't just fork out the cash and hope that by going there you will learn what you need.
Passive learning is a waste of money too. Just expecting to be great by showing up to class or doing the minimum requirement to pass is a joke and you won't get you value for your money.
Anyway I should stop... I could rant forever about it lol.

It all depends of the educators. But it should serve as a good experience meeting other artist and people with the same interests as yours, also serves for you to see the variety of styles even if yours is unique from the rest, you learn to appreciate the other works and learn from them. Students learn from each other as well as from their teacher or if their teacher's aren't good they'll still learn from other students as they're fellow artist. I'd say a good art school is very much worth the time and money.
Social interaction, learning, life experiences, possible new friends, experiencing a whole new world that might be very good for you. Even if I still say I didn't learn a thing on my 2 years of college I won't ever say I wasted them, because I have a lot of memories of new friends and both good and bad experiences that both made me grow.
You can and have to always try anything you are able to, even if it's not the best option or it disappoints you, you tried, and learned if only a bit from it. Every new step makes way to a new path and new doors and choices to take.
Nothing is a waste. Everything should have something new for you to learn from. If you say there was nothing, it might not be the experience, it might be you closed to them. So yeah. I'll vote yes. I WANT to go to an official art school. I love my academy very much even if it's a small one with not as many opportunities, but I'm learning a lot both in art and in life and I will never think of it as a waste even if I don't come out with a degree on anything or come back to be unemployed and stuck at home. I'll be full of memories, very good memories, and they were very much worth all the time, the money, the tears, the laughs, the pains and struggles. Another episode of your life being written is worth every bit you spend on it.
For me, it certainly is. I know very little of the modern technical side of film and animation and need at least some instruction in that area.
I spent one year at The Savannah College of Art and Design and had an absolute blast. Granted, that one year cost me $16,000 on a student loan that I've managed to get down to $900 now, seven years later. I had to drop out for several irritating and personal reasons. *grumble* Still, I don't regret the time I spent there, and I'm all too ready to get back into art school once I'm working as a broadcast captioner and making the sort of money that will enable me to attend. I won't go back to Savannah, but I'm pretty sure I'll find something on the west coast that's to my liking.
I hate that the prices are so steep, but hey, it's just money, right? *sigh*
