Yep, just ran accross these. I forgot all about 'em. One year a major anime convention decided to make a deck of cards out of fan artwork. Two of my drawings got picked. You get teh honor, but not teh cash. 'Kay? So forgive me abusing my bragging rights.
Featruing Koji Nanjo Don't Dance:[link] as The King of Hearts. Especially if you are a soccar player in high school wearing short shorts. Heh.
I'll upload my ooold pin-up piece "Usagi in a Hat" which is featured as The Jack of Hearts.
I think they thought that, well, them using your art, hence, you get promoted a little... o.O Maybe they thought that was enough?
I mean, I'd be happy if my fanart would *ever* show up anywhere... o.o*... >.>* *sigh*
But yeah, they really should give some money. In mean, you used colours, hence you used materials they should pay for! ^^
Yep, that's exactly what they thought. Buuut, I got a few other perks at the con that year. Free membership and a free dinner. Yeah, it was flattering but I was also expected to keep providing them with free art. Unfortunately it came exactly at a time that I was feeling pretty "used" in general. I was tired from working full time, my job was paying my real bills while art was becomming a drain instead of a joy. It was looking like art was never going to take me anywhere. On top of that, fandom in general was giving me chaffing marks. So...I ended up taking it down a notch, then two, then pretty much all together. I miss a lot of people, but further complication made it even harder to stay in touch. I have my memories though. A lot of them good.
When a con turns your work into a T-shirt they usually don't feel like they even need to give you one for free either. I fought and won my battles in those areas but it wasn't easy and I did realize that some friends were not my friends. Dissident was among the staff though, I had one leader who stood up for his artists. He lost his position though. Basically, if you think you got what it takes as an artist, put your shit out there. No one is gonna come knocking on your door, in the comic industry, you're better off building your own. I'll admit, I didn't quite have the gall to do that at that age. I was still pretty confused about life in general.

I'm not expecting to make money with comics...
I'm realistic enough that I just know I can't. My art is too... "bad"... o.o
That and I'm a lazy ass and I'm not ambitious enough.
'm gonna be a teacher...
